I seem to remember it was the Animals who had the hit with "House of the Rising Sun." Made them the bad boys of 1964.
BTO does it well. But much too long. (but then it is long.) And "wall of sound" makes it an opera rather than a lament.

I see Bob Dylan's singing it in '62. That's not weird. Bob Dylan's weird. Or so I thought. Give him a plus for idolizing Woody Guthrie, but schreeching and scraping and yoyah mouth accordion - that's not music.
Finally my Navy buddy convinced me I should hear everything he ever sang. So, now my journey has become a timeline of musical events. I was in the Navy from Yellow Submarine to Big Brass Bed.
